Responsive Website Development

Literate Systems was founded in 1999 as an Internet Technology teaching company with the aim of teaching individuals and small companies how to use the software they already had; we wanted to make their systems literate to them!  In an attempt to attract business using the fairly new internet we wrote our own website that year.  To our surprise in many ways, it started getting enquiries many of which were to ask if we would write a website for them rather than teach them and so we moved to providing internet services and Literate Systems in its current form was born.  Since this start we have developed many websites for a wide range of clients including charities, individuals and Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) clients.

Technology has changed a lot.  When we were a start up business the time a page took to load was the biggest concern for us - remember those "skip intro" buttons back in the day?  Today the speed of the internet and smart phones and tablets means that functionality is now absolutely key to a successful and usable website.  It is very likely today that small screens will be the most common sized screen looking at your website and it is essential that your website works across a range of screen sizes from smart phones, to tablets, to laptops to big screen desktop computers.  Responsive website design is the answer as this allows your website to change and adapt for the device that is currently looking at it.

Responsive Layout

Try changing your screen size while looking at the following grid and see how it changes (if you're using a smart phone then try flipping it between portrait and landscape).  On a bigger screen you should see 4 vertical columns containing text, images, etc; on a smaller screen it will be 2 vertical columns with 2 rows in each and on the smallest screens it will be one vertical column containing 4 rows.... It is all the same code but it responds to the screen size of your device.  Each cell can contain text, images, links, videos, and anything else that a web page can contain.
